Swansong

20Jun12

Overhead in the lift at work this morning: a woman, rather shaken, was saying she’d just witnessed two male swans trying to drown each other as she cycled along a towpath in north London. It was, apparently, ‘horrific’. Already gathered on the bank was a small crowd of worried citizens, whose more enterprising members elected to ‘throw stuff’ at the swans ‘to get them to stop’. This met with as much success as you would expect, so the thickest of the lot decided to ‘dive into the canal and separate them’. Sadly we arrived at her floor at that moment so I don’t know what happened, but I googled ‘swan fight canal’ and saw this. I like the stylish swan-carrying bags (don’t swans peck?), and I’m impressed/appalled by the woman who drove the ‘ecstatic’ birds, unsedated, through the streets of Newport in the back of a small car.
